THE SHORT VERSION

Google TV Streamer is the cheaper option in this pair. Apple’s fourth-generation TV box is announced but not yet on sale; wait for independent reviews before paying more for its promised extras.

First, compare the right models

A TV streaming box connects to your television and runs apps for watching films, shows and other video. Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer are two such devices; they are not televisions, and buying either does not include every streaming subscription.

This comparison covers the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Apple TV 4K fourth generation, announced October 13, 2026. Apple says the new box becomes available November 13; it is not a product we have tested. Its announced US price is $299. Google’s US store displayed $149.99 on October 24. Older articles quoting Google’s $99.99 launch price or describing Apple’s Ethernet-free base model are not a reliable guide to this purchase.

The shared essentials

Both list 4K output at up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos, plus gigabit Ethernet. Those format logos do not guarantee every app, programme, television and sound system will deliver every format. Check your actual services and equipment before buying.

Google specifies 32 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 5, a Matter hub and a Thread border router. Its home panel and casting from compatible apps make it a sensible fit for a household already using Google Home. Apple specifies 128 GB, an A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7 and Thread. Its announced surround option using four compatible HomePods is relevant to an Apple-home-theatre plan, not a reason every household needs the pricier box.

Our recommendation

Choose Google if you want a lower-cost box in this pair and its apps and Google Home integration match what you already use. Consider Apple if its specific Apple Home or HomePod features justify the extra cost—but wait for independent testing of the new hardware rather than treating announced specifications as a performance verdict.

Do not upgrade solely because an assistant gains an AI label. Apple’s announcement includes device, language and software conditions for Siri AI. Check those requirements against the devices you own. Both products also require an HDMI cable sold separately, and streaming subscriptions remain separate costs. If your existing television already handles your apps reliably, keeping it is the cheapest option.
